Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup mashed fresh strawberries
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
- 1 cup cold water
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 8 oz package cream cheese, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 loaf French bread, cut into 2-inch thick slices
- 1 tsp butter
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, heat the mashed strawberries and 1/2 cup white sugar over medium heat.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water together, then add to the strawberries.
- Cook and stir until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Reduce heat to low and simmer while preparing the other ingredients.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and cinnamon. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, vanilla extract, and 3/4 cup white sugar until smooth.
- Cut the French bread slices and carefully make a slit in each slice without cutting all the way through.
- Stuff the cream cheese mixture into each slit using a spatula.
- Heat the butter in a large skillet over low to medium heat.
- Dip each stuffed bread slice gently into the egg mixture, coating both sides and letting excess drip off.
- Place the dipped bread in the skillet and cook for about 3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Serve warm topped with strawberry syrup, whipped cream, and powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
Use thick slices of bread to avoid sogginess. Be careful not to over-soak the bread in the egg mixture to maintain texture. Optional toppings like whipped cream and powdered sugar enhance the dish.
