Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup salted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 3/4 teaspoon almond extract or vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup colored sugar (orange, black, and purple recommended)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and almond or vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until a dough forms.
- Divide the dough into portions and roll each into a log shape.
- Sprinkle colored sugar evenly over the logs and gently press it into the dough.
- Roll the logs tightly to create a spiral effect with the colored sugar.
- Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
- Slice the chilled logs into 1/4-inch thick cookies and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For best results, use room temperature ingredients and chill the dough logs thoroughly before slicing to maintain the spiral shape. Colored sugar can be homemade if not available in stores. These cookies keep well in an airtight container for several days.
