Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup salted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 3/4 teaspoon almond extract or vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup colored sugar (orange, black, and purple recommended)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and almond or vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until a dough forms.
- Divide the dough into portions and roll each into a log shape.
- Sprinkle colored sugar over the dough logs and gently roll to swirl the sugar into the dough, creating a spiral effect.
- Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or until firm.
- Slice the chilled dough into 1/4-inch thick rounds and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 8-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For best results, use colored sanding sugar to achieve vibrant spirals. Chilling the dough is essential to maintain the spiral shape during baking. These cookies can be customized with different colored sugars for other holidays.
