Luxurious Black Velvet Cake

For the Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp black food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, mix oil, buttermilk, eggs, black food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
  5. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until fluffy.
  8. Frost the cooled cake layers and serve.
