Classic Green Bean Casserole

A traditional creamy mushroom sauce mixed with tender green beans and topped with crispy fried onions, baked until golden and bubbly. This popular side dish is perfect for holidays and family dinners.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 6 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups frozen cut green beans (or fresh, trimmed and halved)
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil. Add green beans and boil until tender-crisp, about 2-3 minutes. Drain well.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, seasoned salt, and 1 cup of crispy fried onions.
  4. Add the drained green beans to the mixture and stir to combine.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a 2-quart baking dish.
  6. Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes or until bubbly.
  7. Remove from oven and stir.
  8. Top casserole with remaining 1/2 cup crispy fried onions.
  9. Return to the oven and bake an additional 10 minutes or until onions are golden brown.

Notes

Use fresh, frozen, or canned green beans; adjust boiling time accordingly. For extra flavor, add a dash of soy sauce or use fresh mushrooms in the sauce. For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth if substituting the mushroom soup. Crispy fried onions on top can be homemade or store-bought for convenience.
