Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy, tangy fried green tomatoes make a perfect Southern-style appetizer or side dish.

For the Crust:

  • 4 large green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds and set aside.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  4. Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk mixture, then coat with the flour-cornmeal mixture.
  5. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry tomato slices in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Notes
