Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy, tangy fried green tomatoes with a golden cornmeal crust.

For the Crust:

  • 4 medium green tomatoes
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds and set aside.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together egg and buttermilk.
  4. Dip tomato slices into the egg mixture, then coat with the cornmeal mixture.
  5. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  6. Fry tomatoes in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
