Cherry Chocolate Dream Cake

A decadent layered chocolate cake featuring rich chocolate cake layers, cherry pie filling centered between layers, and a creamy chocolate pudding topping with whipped dessert topping.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 12 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 envelopes dessert topping mix (such as Kraft Dream Whip)
  • 1 1/4 cups cold milk
  • 1 can cherry pie filling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract; mix on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water last (batter will be thin). Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  5. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Prepare the topping by mixing instant chocolate pudding mix and dessert topping mix with cold milk until thickened.
  8. Place one cake layer on serving plate, spread half the cherry pie filling over it.
  9. Top with second cake layer, then spread the chocolate pudding topping evenly over the cake.
  10. Refrigerate before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

You can substitute any chocolate cake mix if short on time. Garnish with fresh cherries or chocolate shavings for enhanced presentation. The batter will be thin—this is normal.
